Travel Channel
Names SPI as One of America’s Top Beaches for Families in 2006
South Padre Island Texas is “perfect for vacationing
families and winter Texans,” according to an article on the T ravel
Channel Web site that names tSPI's Beaches Named on
MSN.com Top 10 Beach List
South Padre Island's white sand and turquoise-blue surf are what defined
this exotic destination when the editors of MSN.com's CitySearch named it
one of the nation's top 10 beaches.
The
designation, released this week, touts the Island at the state's
southernmost tip as a prime location for various activities. It states that
SPI beaches are "renowned for massive Spring Break crowds" and "have also
become popular year-round destinations for families and retirees." It
further states that "the dunes and grassy areas are gaining increasing
notoriety among birding enthusiasts and sand-castle artists, and the Island
is emerging as a top spot for windsurfing.

Many
companies rent equipment for fishing, parasailing, jet-skiing and other
water sports along both bay and gulf beaches." SPI Mayor Robert N.
Pinkerton Jr. said being included on the list for the reasons it did,
breaks away for the Spring Break-only depiction.
"There's more to SPI than Spring Break, and the list shows that we're more
than just a Spring Break destination." Pinkerton said. "The Island is also
about families, retirees and other activities. I thought it was really very
good." Dan Quandt, executive director for the SPI Convention and Visitors
Bureau, said the Island's beaches are unique and deserve the designation.
"The Island is an escape for families, singles and retirees," Quandt said.
"It appeals to all demographics. We're honored to be included on the
top-beach list."

The Town of South Padre Island is just 30 miles north of the Mexican
border. Bordered by the Gulf of Mexico and the Laguna Madre Bay, this
little slip of land is a 34-mile-long barrier reef, 1/2 mile at its widest
point.
The Island's thriving coastal town provides activities and amenities, while
wide expanses of unspoiled dunes preserve nature and privacy. The tourist
season attracts some 20,000 to 200,000 visitors at any given time. SPI is
linked to the mainland by the Queen Isabella Memorial Causeway - a 2 1/2
mile four-lane bridge to Port Isabel, Texas.
